Alas, humans are a little less bright in understanding these body language cues so kittens must use verbal means of communicating with their humans, hence they meow. There are a number of variations to the meow which represent different messages.
If you have a kitten who greets you when you arrive then you are lucky! This means kitten wants you to do something for her. She may want you to play with her, give her food or treats, or wants you to open the door for her so she can go out or come in. A worried or annoyed kitten will make a lower-pitched, long and drawn out meow.
This is sort of a complaining meow — either food and water bowl has been empty for too long or the litterbox needs cleaning right now. This is also the sound of an anxious meow telling you that kitten may be stressed or confused. Kittens usually vocalize this type of meow when they have been left alone by themselves all day. A new kitten who is feeling scared or overwhelmed by the unfamiliar surrounding may also emit this type of meow.
A shrill high-pitched piercingly loud meow, either short or long and drawn-out, usually indicates a kitten in pain. So this meow is sort of tricky. One must also take into consideration that some kittens are just more naturally talkative than others. Kittens from this breed can be very needy and demanding of attention.
They sometimes follow you all around and keep meowing loudly. This is not to discourage you from choosing these oriental breeds. Illness — Constant cat meowing can be a sign of illness such as kidney disease, problems urinating or other health issues. If this behaviour is something new in your cat, contact your local vet Attention seeking — Despite many people thinking that cats like to be left alone, cats often meow to initiate play, petting, or to get you to talk to them Hunger — Your kitty will make sure to remind you if the food bowl is empty, and you may notice your cat becoming more vocal when it gets closer to feeding time Greeting — Some cats may greet you when you arrive home, or even when you pass them in the house Stress — A new pet, change in home or the loss of a loved one may cause your cat to become stressed and often more vocal.
Try to find out what is causing the stress in your cat and help them adjust to the change Ageing — Just like us, cats can suffer from mental confusion, or cognitive dysfunction, as they age. This may lead to your cat crying for no apparent reason. If this is the case, consult with your vet who can prescribe medication. Cats also yowl—a sound similar to the meow but more drawn out and melodic. Unlike meowing, adult cats do yowl at one another, specifically during breeding season.
When does meowing become excessive? All cats are going to meow to some extent—this is normal communication behavior.
