I personally alternated between good days and bad days. If you are on commission, you are in competition with all the other sales associates in your area; your manager should have given you specific rules of engagement regarding customers that all sales associates are expected to observe. During the slow shifts, your focus will be on cleaning, merchandising, stocking, and ensuring that things in place. This gives the store a leg up during the fast-paced, high demand shifts as there is less busy work and more time to focus on the needs of the customers.
Just keep in mind, that the associate wears multiple hats during a shift: they handle cash, assist customers, stock and merchandise, clean, and even do inventory. In my experience, Macy's tries to assign you to a department that suits your strengths. I excelled in the men's department right off the bat, so I was put there. I spent the day answering questions, adjusting displays, and checking customers out at the register.
