Also, I think I would have bought this camera as it is a few years back when I was getting into photography. Back then, spending more than five hundred dollars on camera seemed outrageous, clip-on flash seemed stupid and I didn't really know what to do with a viewfinder. At this price with no phase detect auto focus, it will be a pointless flop. It seems to be an E-P5 good for its day with a few extra mega pixels.
Since this is essentially a consolidation of the EP and EPL lines neither of which had built in EVFs, or the option to add one in recent models then the ommission makes sense. And it is a better camera overall. Maybe one of those penetrating DPR interviews can inquire why they don't want to sell it in North America.
But other than inviting gray market, it's not clear what a limited release like this accomplishes. A guess would be something to do with warranties and service. Which are all the case today because of i new model after change of company owners, ii shortage of chips because of Taiwan drought, iii shrinking camera market, iv global epidemic. I am getting closer and closer to selling all my m43 glass. So because brand x released a entry level camera without mic port you are selling your lenses of brand x. Did brand x hurt your feelings by bringing out this camera you had no intention of buying in the first place?
The next few Fuji releases I will come over to name a few things it doesn't have and why I won't switch to Fuji. That will make this website such a nicer place. Switching is largely pointless. When I want to take "big boy" pictures I pull out my Nikon Ds, not worried about Fuji can or cannot do. The tools it offer speaks to enthusiasts and higher, not general consumers content with a phone experience.
While the EVF may not be used all the time, it's absence it a mistake for sure. Generally agree. E-P5 is still unmatched!!! And I still use these feautures a lot, expecially with bright lens. Jello effects when panning? More noise? In bright sun this make a lot of difference!! I wonder if Olympus will ever release a camera with in-body stabilisation. Have to wait probably more versions depending if its the e-p or e-pl.
That would be great marketing though once they hit that. This camera has 4. A solid entry in the "premium point-and-shoot" category. Think of it as a Lumix GF with benefits, and it starts to make sense. Only the PEN line seems to be moving forward under the new ownership. It would be good to see a verified list of recycled parts in support of your claim. I understand the A is still in use, albeit with modifications and newer chip sets, a bit like Olympus? What new features in E-P7? It still use very old sensor and processor from other model. Sony a is old model since Successor Sony a released at with minor improvement. Latest model is Sony a which release at The FF did not offer me enough advantages to justify price and weight. The Fuji Xtrans on the day was simply horrible because of the software, green casts , worms etc.
But when all said and done all camera companies , including Fuji recycle parts. Putting that to one side , the pen is a form factor that appeals to many. Your assertions of cheaper and better will not change that. Lot outstanding artwork was shot because skilled photographer not gears.
Are it worth? Can it shoot outstanding artwork? That is my point , on the one hand you have spec sheets, on the other photographers results. The latter are the only reason to own a camera , that is if you are interested in photography. You can try an evaluate cameras if you want , but comparing the component parts is not the sum of the whole. It is not difficult to see that a good photographer can accomplish more with a modest camera than could be achieved by an average photographer using the best gear.
However that takes away nothing from fact it is a credible photographers tool. Amazing monochromes can be created using the features of this dial. I guess only JPG shooters are excited by these in-camera features…. This is my takes on the looks of this camera. It looks absolutely stunning from the front and very good from the back but cheap from the top. My point is really the it looks cheap from above. Those wheels and buttons looks flimsy. And the text looks oversized like on some toy.

I'm not in the market for this but it at least shows that the new overlords will bring a new item likely designed by the previous owners to market. I hope it finds buyers, as I like and primarily shoot with the m43 system and want it to survive.
I also hope that the newest sensor tech we've been hearing about comes to market soon before m43 loses users to larger sensor formats with similarly sized bodies realizing lenses for larger formats will be larger. Panasonic seems to be more focused on the S format than m43 as it's a growth market right now, whereas m43 is more mature and less likely to grow. Maybe gh6 will change that I see this as a swipe at the Panasonic GX9 niche.
If this camera's tilt screen has similar specs and performance it might an ideal alternative for those who want to stay in the Olympus camp.
EP in the name is a clue as to where it fits. The EP5 certainly wasn't entry level - look up the review it clearly states mid range body in range finder style. Some of the compromises are to keep it small, it's not all about cutting costs. Letters mean very little or nothing. They change all the time.

Another possibility It was there so people could buy clip on EVFs and finders, macro lights, and a few other accessories. It disappeared around Odds are that very few people were buying those accessories, or Olympus surely would have kept the port. Since then they've removed the connection for the external EVF, removed the ability to have custom modes aka MySets , reduced the number of customizable buttons you can no longer customize the right or down arrow , and reduced the features you CAN assign to a button e.
I'm not sure, but I think the bodies are now plastic where they used to be metal. A shame because with Olympus' high-quality tiny primes these are coat-pocketable cameras that take great photos.
A tough crowd here at DPR. People complain that the reviews are few and far between, but when they finally get a review, it's the wrong one. What stands out to me is that with a few changes, this looks like the camera I had years ago. Jeff has no idea of the so called beginners camera market, most buy a DSLR or mirrorless type of camera with a viewfinder.
This camera is clearly created for the casual users market which is huge in Asia,. This camera continues to outsell a lot of more expensive, higher resolution cameras in the Asian market. Also unlike Canon M, Olympus has made more than four lenses for it in the last dozen years.
So it's got that going for it.. In Korea, Olympus has announced their camera division will soon closing business. Olympus also failed to realize beginners only care about MP. They can make a crappy 20MP sensor camera and it would still sell as long it got USB charging capacity. If Olympus unable attract beginner photographer, means no new buyer.
